Overview

  • Indiana Conservation Officers and National Park Rangers responded to Boaters Beach at 4:20 p.m. on July 6 after a passerby pulled David and Jameson Meneou from Lake Michigan.
  • Officers performed CPR before transporting the 65-year-old father from Joliet and his 20-year-old son from Lockport to Northwest Health Valparaiso ER, where both were pronounced dead.
  • A preliminary DNR investigation indicates Jameson entered a deep water drop-off and began struggling before his father jumped in to save him and also became distressed.
  • The Indiana Department of Natural Resources and conservation officers are continuing their inquiry into the circumstances of the drownings.
  • Boaters Beach’s remote location, strong currents and sudden drop-offs have contributed to past water safety incidents at Indiana Dunes National Park.
