Overview

  • The layoffs include 432 teachers, 311 paraprofessionals, 677 special education classroom assistants, 33 security officers and five parent workers across district-run schools.
  • Ben Felton, CPS chief talent officer, said 123 special education teachers and up to 300 SECAs with satisfactory evaluations qualify for district-run retention pools for redeployment next year.
  • A CPS spokesperson said about 80% of those laid off are expected to secure other positions within the district, consistent with prior summers.
  • The Chicago Teachers Union and SEIU Local 73 warned that the reductions will disproportionately affect special education and bilingual programs.
  • CPS officials will host four additional community sessions while assessing further cuts, potential borrowing and tapping TIF surplus to close the remaining gap.
