Chicago Police Probe 29 Linked Business Burglaries After Overnight Surge

Investigators attribute the spree to one crew using quick smash-and-grab tactics.

Overview

  • Ten businesses were hit in less than three hours early Oct. 20, with several of those incidents clustered in Uptown.
  • The break-ins occurred from Sept. 21 to Oct. 20 across at least 16 Chicago neighborhoods, including the Loop, Logan Square, Edgewater and Garfield Ridge.
  • Police describe groups of one to eight suspects believed to be roughly 15 to 25 years old, typically wearing black hoodies and ski masks.
  • Offenders forced entry by breaking front glass, then targeted cash registers, bottled alcohol and ATMs, often causing more damage than the value stolen.
  • CPD issued a citywide alert and requested tips to Area One (312-747-8384), Area Three (312-744-8263) and Area Five (312-746-7394) or at CPDTIP.com using case 25-CWP-029D, while advising businesses to improve lighting and review security footage.
