Chicago Police Detain Person of Interest in Little Village Hate Graffiti Case

Police are seeking public assistance to confirm if the detained individual matches surveillance images from the swastika graffiti case that included pro-ICE messages.

Overview

  • Authorities took a person of interest into custody on Monday but have not yet confirmed whether the individual matches the July 19–20 surveillance footage.
  • The vandalism involved swastikas and “ICE Rules” messages spray-painted on four buildings in the 2700 block of West Cermak Road and the 2500 block of South Central Park Avenue.
  • Targets included the Latinos Progresando legal clinic, La Frutería grocery store and the office of State Senator Celina Villanueva.
  • Police released images on July 25 showing a white man estimated to be 25–35 years old wearing a graphic black T-shirt and carrying a can of spray paint and urged tipsters to call detectives.
  • Community leaders condemned the actions as hate crimes and vowed to maintain services for immigrants despite these intimidation tactics.
