Overview

• Police identified the suspect as 35-year-old McKale Mitchell of Chicago Heights and announced two felony counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer and two counts of firearm possession as a repeat felony offender.

• Authorities say Mitchell fled on foot, officers saw he had a gun, he ignored commands to drop it, and after he allegedly assaulted two officers one officer shot him in the leg.
• Mitchell was taken to a local hospital in serious condition, and two officers were transported for observation after the encounter.
• Police reported recovering two guns at the scene, COPA opened a use-of-force investigation, and the involved officers were placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
