Overview

  • The district will close 15 pools on August 10 and another 42 on August 17 while keeping 19 neighborhood pools, 22 lakefront beaches and the inland Humboldt Park Beach open through Labor Day.
  • Selections for extended operations relied on Chicago’s Heat Vulnerability Index alongside pool capacity, proximity and maintenance readiness to prioritize neighborhoods most at risk from extreme heat.
  • To address anticipated staff shortages as nearly 70 percent of lifeguards return to school, the district has onboarded more than 700 seasonal lifeguards.
  • All indoor pools are scheduled to reopen on September 2 for open and lap swim pending maintenance, with fall aquatics programming beginning September 15.
  • Water spray features across the city will close by September 30 to accommodate seasonal maintenance and capital improvement projects.
