Chicago Opens Mile-Long Neighborhood Greenway on Long Avenue

The project applies Vision Zero principles to slow speeds on a corridor previously in the city’s top 10 percent for severe crashes.

Overview

  • The Greenway extends for one mile between Irving Park Road and Belmont Avenue and includes a reduced 20 mph limit, 14 speed humps, painted bike lanes and plastic posts at crosswalks.
  • Two new one-way segments around Addison Street introduce contraflow bike lanes and channel through-traffic back to Central and Laramie avenues.
  • The redesign was driven by two teen bicycle crashes in October 2023 and February 2024 that underscored the street’s dangers.
  • CDOT data placed Long Avenue in the top decile for severe crashes, noting the street carried roughly 4,000 vehicles per day and that 80 percent of dangerous crashes involved nonlocal drivers.
  • The corridor links local parks and elementary schools, providing a safer route for youth cyclists and neighborhood residents.
