Chicago Officer Who Fatally Shot Partner Faces New Assault Investigation

COPA has opened a probe into allegations that Officer Baker battered a colleague at a Wicker Park bar, with Rivera’s family pressing for public release of sealed shooting records.

Overview

  • The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has launched an investigation into claims that Officer Carlos Baker and an associate battered a female off-duty officer outside the DSTRKT Bar & Grill in Wicker Park.
  • The injured officer received treatment for facial lacerations, filed a police report and an evidence technician documented her injuries, and Chicago police say no arrests have been made.
  • The June 5 friendly-fire shooting that killed Officer Krystal Rivera remains under inquiry, and a Cook County court order continues to block release of related body-camera footage and personnel files.
  • Baker, who joined the Chicago Police Department in December 2021, has accumulated more than a dozen misconduct complaints, including an earlier bar-related allegation that did not lead to criminal charges.
  • Rivera’s family, represented by attorney Antonio Romanucci, is demanding an independent Illinois State Police investigation and full public disclosure of all videos and internal records.
