Chicago Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Officer Hit by Car During Englewood Rail Theft Probe

COPA opened a shooting review with the involved officer placed on 30-day administrative duty.

Overview

  • Police identified the suspect as Barry Hayes, 32, and filed two counts of attempted first-degree murder plus charges including criminal damage, aggravated battery and assault of a peace officer, and leaving the scene.
  • CPD says the confrontation unfolded just after 5 a.m. Wednesday on the 5800 block of South Princeton as officers responded to railcar thefts and Hayes allegedly drove an SUV at them, striking an officer before crashing into a marked squad car as shots were fired.
  • No one was struck by gunfire; Hayes was hospitalized with minor crash injuries, the officer he hit was listed in good condition, and several other officers were treated or observed at hospitals.
  • Investigators reported recovering two firearms from the SUV, and COPA and CPD’s Investigative Response Team are reviewing the shooting.
  • In a related pursuit, officers say a fleeing van later struck two squad cars near 71st and Yale before a 30-year-old suspect was run over and critically injured, with the vehicle later found abandoned on South State Street; Hayes is set to appear in court Friday.
