Overview

  • At community meetings this week, the Austin (15th) District commander said the city sent promoter Jamal “JRoy” Williams a cease-and-desist and opened an investigation into his role.
  • Williams, a Chicago Public Schools special education classroom assistant, says he was placed on paid suspension as CPS reviews the matter.
  • Authorities say thousands gathered near La Crosse and Maypole on Aug. 9–10, where eight people were shot across nearby blocks, including the fatal shootings of Jashura Monae Blackhawk, 22, and 18-year-old Kaleb Williams.
  • Cook County prosecutors charged 35-year-old Ortez Owens in Kaleb Williams’ killing during an alleged robbery encounter away from the party; a judge ordered him held, with a court date set for Sept. 2.
  • Police had asked Williams to cancel days in advance, residents reported crowding that blocked emergency access, and city leaders called for accountability and better organized alternatives to large unsanctioned gatherings.
