Chicago Holiday Travel Slows in Fog as O'Hare Records Dozens of Cancellations

TSA projects record holiday volumes for 2025.

Overview

  • On Sunday, O'Hare reported nearly 100 flight cancellations and delays that eased to about 45 minutes by evening after earlier waits near 90 minutes.
  • Heavy morning fog caused problems at Midway, where operations were busy but generally smooth through the holiday weekend.
  • Midway processed an estimated 48,000 passengers on Saturday, the airport's busiest day of the holiday stretch according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.
  • TSA expected Sunday to be the weekend’s peak screening day with about 2.86 million people nationwide, as Chicago traffic is projected to be roughly 6% higher than last year.
  • A winter storm in the Northeast and Great Lakes produced thousands of disruptions on Saturday, with O'Hare logging just under 60 cancellations and under 750 delays compared with Midway’s four cancellations and a little more than 180 delays.
