Chicago Holiday Travel Peaks as Midway Logs Busiest Day and Weather Drives Flight Disruptions

Operations remained mostly smooth despite regional storms.

Overview

  • The TSA projects another record holiday travel year in 2025, with Chicago passenger volumes up about 6% from last year.
  • Midway handled roughly 48,000 passengers on Saturday, its busiest day of the holiday period, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.
  • Across the holiday window from Dec. 19 to Jan. 5, O'Hare and Midway expect about 4.8 million passengers, nearly a 6% year-over-year increase.
  • On Saturday, O'Hare recorded just under 60 cancellations and under 750 delays, while Midway reported four cancellations and a little more than 180 delays.
  • Winter weather produced travel challenges in the Northeast, including nearly 3 inches of snow around New York City and more than 2,000 cancellations or delays across the Northeast and Great Lakes, and TSA forecasts the heaviest nationwide volume on Sunday with AAA warning of peak road congestion from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
