Overview

  • U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued an administrative subpoena in April seeking personal information for CityKey applicants from the past three years.
  • City Clerk Anna Valencia paused the online application portal on June 15 to safeguard applicants over concerns about federal data requests.
  • City Corporation Counsel Mary Richardson-Lowry said Chicago has no legal obligation to comply and will contest any court order demanding the records.
  • Residents can still obtain a CityKey by scheduling in-person appointments where all documentation is returned and no digital records are kept.
  • Established in 2017, CityKey functions as a municipal ID as well as a Ventra transit card, library card and prescription benefit card.
