Overview

• On August 3, 2025, family, friends and Bike Lane Uprising held a vigil at Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street to honor 18-year-old Yader Castaneda, who was killed there on Memorial Day 2024.
• Participants placed a white ghost bike at the crash site and adorned it with bright yellow flowers while wearing yellow in memory of Castaneda’s favorite color.
• Ghost bikes are roadside memorials painted white and installed where cyclists have died to highlight the need for improved bike safety and infrastructure.
• Organizers say this marks the third ghost bike installation in Chicago’s Loop by Bike Lane Uprising over the past four years as part of ongoing cycling safety advocacy.
• The Hummer SUV driver charged with failure to reduce speed remains under legal review, and the community continues to press for accountability.
