Chicago Driver Charged After Deadly Stevenson Expressway Crash

Officials say high speed and a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit link the driver's conduct to a passenger's death.

Overview

  • The crash happened early Saturday morning on Interstate 55 near Wentworth when a GMC Suburban rear-ended a Nissan SUV and then hit a concrete barrier, Illinois State Police said.
  • Police arrested 20-year-old Armando Gonzalez Vargas and charged him with one count of reckless homicide and one count of aggravated DUI involving death.
  • Blood tests showed a .199 blood-alcohol concentration and court records allege Gonzalez Vargas was driving more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit when the collision occurred.
  • The GMC passenger, identified in reporting as 26-year-old Carlos Vasquez, was pronounced dead at the scene and the GMC driver plus both occupants of the Nissan were taken to area hospitals for treatment.
  • Investigators continue to process evidence and court records show Gonzalez Vargas was released from the hospital and taken into custody with an initial court appearance scheduled as the felony case moves forward.
