Chiapas Registers M4.7 and M4.4 Quakes After Oaxaca’s M4.0

SASMEX sirens stayed silent due to distance–magnitude thresholds not being met.

Overview

  • Mexico’s National Seismological Service reported two Tuesday quakes in Chiapas: magnitude 4.4 at 05:39 southwest of Mapastepec at 3.3 km depth and magnitude 4.7 at 06:25 southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo at 10 km depth.
  • A day earlier, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck south of Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, at 01:26 with an 8 km depth.
  • The SSN logged 124 earthquakes on August 25 across the country prior to the August 26 events, underscoring routine seismic activity.
  • The Mexican seismic alert system did not activate in Mexico City because the events fell below its combined magnitude and distance thresholds for public alerts.
  • Civil protection authorities reiterated standard guidance including staying calm, avoiding windows and heavy furniture, seeking structural safe zones, and waiting to use stairs or elevators until shaking ends.
