Chiapas Detains Cintalapa Mayor as 11 Municipal Police Are Charged in Sweeping Security Operation

The moves form part of an interagency push responding to December attacks in Villaflores.

Overview

  • Prosecutors reviewed the cases of 156 municipal officers and brought charges against 11 for improper use of decorations, uniforms and insignias, releasing 145 under reserva de ley.
  • Those charged include three from Cintalapa, six from Ocozocoautla and two from Jiquipilas, according to the state attorney general.
  • Authorities detained Cintalapa’s mayor, Ernesto Cruz Díaz, on allegations of corruption, abuse of authority and malversation, with a separate inquiry into possible ties to criminal groups.
  • Raids between January 2 and 4 by the Army, National Guard and state authorities seized about 200 mobile phones and doses of drugs across multiple municipalities.
  • Investigators say cases also examine potential halconeo activities, and state and federal forces are temporarily covering policing duties in the affected towns.
