Chhattisgarh Tiger Count Doubles to 35 as State Clears New Conservation Push

Officials outlined NTCA-cleared translocations to bolster weak reserves.

Overview

  • The April 2025 survey results were presented at the 15th State Wildlife Welfare Board meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
  • Achanakmar holds 18 tigers, Guru Ghasidas 7, Indravati 6, Bhoramdeo Sanctuary 3 and Udanti 1, guiding where resources will be focused.
  • NTCA has approved moving five tigers from Madhya Pradesh: two tigresses and one male to Udanti-Sitanadi, and three males to Guru Ghasidas–Tamor Pingla, with implementation expected soon.
  • The board cleared stronger patrolling, protected-area rationalisation and targeted infrastructure works, alongside tourism-linked livelihood steps and a Hill Myna monitoring initiative.
  • Officials said the current 35 tigers were not translocated, some may have arrived through natural migration, and a comprehensive Tiger Conservation Plan is nearing completion.
