Chewing Gum Task Force Funds Wolverhampton, Wirral and Kirklees to Tackle Pavement Litter

Defra’s fourth annual scheme is granting three councils nearly £75,000 to clear stubborn gum stains on high-traffic pavements

Overview

  • Wirral Council received £27,500 to deploy specialist cleaning equipment and two temporary operatives to remove gum at Moreton Cross, Pensby Road and Irby Village.
  • City of Wolverhampton Council secured £20,155 to fund targeted pavement scrubbing and install signage aimed at reducing gum litter.
  • Kirklees Council was awarded £26,450 to tackle chewing gum deposits in Heckmondwike and Marsden.
  • Keep Britain Tidy estimates UK councils spend about £7 million each year cleaning gum that stains 77% of streets and 99% of retail sites.
  • Backed by Mars Wrigley and Perfetti Van Melle with up to £10 million over five years, the task force has cleared more than 3.4 million m² of pavement and cut gum litter by up to 80% in some areas.
