State leaders have directed districts to investigate related posts with possible licensure reviews.

Overview

  • Dorothy “Dot” Heffron said she will step down effective Dec. 31, 2025, apologizing for her Instagram comment and saying accountability matters.
  • The Chesterfield County School Board accepted her resignation and will appoint an interim representative for the Clover Hill District until a special election; the board also condemned threats reported against Heffron and others.
  • Her private Instagram story read, “Call me old-fashioned, but I remember when we used to be okay with shooting Nazis,” and was made public in a screenshot shared by Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.
  • Virginia State Superintendent Emily Anne Gullickson told divisions to investigate reported posts about Kirk’s assassination and to consider referrals for licensure revocation to the Virginia Board of Education.
  • Gov. Glenn Youngkin and local board members called for Heffron’s immediate resignation, while Democrat Abigail Spanberger condemned any attempt to justify or minimize the murder; police in Utah have arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in Kirk’s killing.
