Chester Zoo Reveals Four Fossa Pups, the UK's Only This Year

The births bolster a Europe-wide breeding program for Madagascar's vulnerable top predator.

Overview

  • The quartet left the den recently and received first veterinary checks before a public debut on the zoo’s TikTok account.
  • Born on July 8 to resident female Shala and seven-year-old male Zaza, the pups comprise two males and two females.
  • Zaza arrived from San Diego in May after being identified as a strong genetic match under the coordinated European breeding program.
  • The litter is one of just three recorded in European zoos in 2025, according to Chester Zoo.
  • Fossas are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, with an estimated 2,500 to 2,600 in the wild due largely to habitat loss.
