Chester Zoo Names First Snow Leopard Cub as She Makes Public Debut

The female, called Bheri, is part of a coordinated European breeding programme supporting conservation of the vulnerable species.

Overview

  • Keepers say the cub ventured outside for the first time under mum Nubra’s close supervision after weeks in a secluded den.
  • The cub was born to first-time parents Nubra and Yashin and is about 10 weeks old.
  • After thousands of public suggestions, conservationists chose the name Bheri, a nod to a river in Nepal’s Himalayas.
  • The birth forms part of the European endangered species breeding programme to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse population.
  • Chester Zoo also partners with the Snow Leopard Trust and communities in Kyrgyzstan to reduce conflict and protect habitats for a wild population estimated at roughly 4,000.
