Chennai Toddler Drowns in Rain-Filled Vacant Plot as Police Open Unnatural-Death Case

Police opened an unnatural-death case under the BNSS after a rain-formed hazard near the child’s home was reported.

Overview

  • The victim was identified by police as Prenika Shri, aged two years and ten months, from Janani Nagar in Mangadu near Chengalpattu.
  • The child went missing on October 22 in the afternoon and was later found in pooled rainwater in a vacant plot next to her home, then declared brought dead at a nearby hospital.
  • Mangadu Police said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway after the parents filed under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
  • Police sources said a recently elevated road left the adjacent plot at a lower level where rainwater accumulated, creating the puddle where the child drowned.
  • The incident occurred during widespread heavy rain across Tamil Nadu, with separate reports of two deaths in a Cuddalore wall collapse and an IMD alert for further rainfall in Chennai and nearby districts on Thursday.
