Chennai Rains

Overview

  • The Regional Meteorological Centre reported very heavy 24-hour rainfall, including 17 cm each at Sholinganallur and Parry’s, with several other gauges topping 10–15 cm.
  • Meteorologists link the back-to-back downpours to a cyclonic circulation and a trough extending from north interior Tamil Nadu to the Comorin area.
  • Reservoir inflows increased, with Cholavaram receiving 13 cm of rain, Chembarambakkam 11 cm, Poondi 10 cm, and Red Hills 5 cm in the latest tally.
  • IMD maintains a Yellow alert for Chennai, forecasting light to moderate spells with moderate thunderstorms and lightning across the city and nearby districts including Puducherry.
  • IMD has issued marine and wind advisories with squally winds up to 65 kmph possible, advising fishermen to stay ashore as a low-pressure area is likely over the northwestern Bay by August 25.
