Chennai Police Say Overspeeding, Not Racing, Caused Fatal Royapettah Flyover Crash

A police press release cites reckless speeding by a 19-year-old rider as the cause.

Overview

  • Two people — S Syed Sardar Basha, 19, and G Kumaran, about 49 — died in the November 5 night collision on the Peters Road flyover, and a third rider, M Mohammed Suhail, was hospitalized.
  • The crash occurred around 11 p.m. on a flyover that had been barricaded for traffic in Royapettah, with investigators examining how the stretch was accessed.
  • Greater Chennai City Traffic Police now say Basha lost control while riding at high speed on a 155cc motorcycle borrowed from a friend, striking Kumaran’s bike; Suhail then crashed into the fallen vehicle.
  • Police have registered a case, are reviewing CCTV footage, and are probing riders’ social-media activity after earlier reports described an illegal race on the closed flyover.
  • The press note says special vehicle checks are being deployed citywide to deter illegal racing and stunts, while reports say Kumaran was returning from work and had been wearing a helmet.
