Overview

  • Greater Chennai Corporation inaugurated two pilot lounges on June 11 in Anna Nagar and K.K. Nagar under deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s oversight as part of M.K. Stalin’s inclusive infrastructure plan.
  • Gig workers can access air conditioning, clean restrooms, mobile charging stations and real-time surveillance free of charge to rest between assignments.
  • Each lounge measures about 20 by 10 feet, seats up to 25 people and integrates monitoring with GCC’s Command and Control Centre for operational efficiency.
  • Locations were selected for their high concentration of women delivery riders and feature Scandinavian design elements drawn from direct worker feedback.
  • Officials are reviewing user input and planning to secure corporate social responsibility funds to extend the model to more Chennai neighbourhoods.
