Overview
- An intense, localized deluge over Saturday night into Sunday produced official 24-hour totals as high as about 363–363.4 mm at Parry's Corner and widespread double‑digit centimetre totals across Chennai, overwhelming drains in low-lying pockets.
- Greater Chennai Corporation, NDRF and SDRF teams mobilised large-scale response with more than 15,000 personnel, roughly 650 motor and tractor-mounted pumps, cleared 22 subway underpasses and opened hundreds of relief centres to evacuate or shelter affected residents.
- Most floodwater had receded by dawn in many areas, but persistent stagnation remained in pockets such as Perambur and parts of Velachery where residents and officials blamed incomplete desilting, silted catch pits and unfinished drainage works.
- The Regional Meteorological Centre issued yellow and orange alerts for Chennai and several districts, saying the active northeast monsoon driven by an upper-air cyclonic circulation will bring heavy to very heavy rain through October 24 and warn of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
- Officials report no rain-related deaths so far but have kept thousands of relief camps ready and extended deployments; the episode has renewed scrutiny of Chennai’s stormwater system and raised the risk of transport disruption, water-borne health hazards and infrastructure damage in coming days.
