Cheap, Purer Cocaine Floods U.S. as CJNG Expands, Fentanyl Use Falls

Record Colombian output plus a CJNG distribution surge is driving prices down.

Overview

  • U.S. cocaine supply has swelled on record production in Colombia and a distribution push by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, according to recent reporting.
  • Consumption has climbed since 2019, up 154% in the West and 19% in the East, Millennium Health data show.
  • Street prices for pure cocaine now average about $60–$75 per gram, roughly half of levels five years ago, researcher Morgan Godvin reported.
  • Fentanyl use has trended down since mid-2023, per the CDC, as Washington prioritizes synthetic opioids and in July enacted the HALT Fentanyl Act.
  • The U.S. has sanctioned CJNG leaders and posted a $15 million reward for “El Mencho,” while Southern Command this week carried out an operation on a suspected trafficking boat from Venezuela that resulted in three deaths.
