ChatGPT Adds Native Animated GIFs With Images 2.6

Frame-by-frame editing with playback-speed controls brings short looping animation to the chat window, positioning the feature away from full video.

Overview

  • OpenAI began rolling out Images 2.6 to ChatGPT and Codex on Wednesday, November 4, and the update enables one-step animated GIF creation from text prompts or uploaded images.
  • Generated GIFs offer per-frame editing, frame-by-frame viewing, and playback-speed controls so users can fix a single frame without rerunning the full animation.
  • Developer-facing code in OpenAI’s Codex repository shows GIF support for 2 to 16 frames with a default of nine frames and ~200ms per frame, but the API GIF features remain behind a feature flag and lack public documentation.
  • OpenAI also released two API variants, GPT-Image-2.6 Flare for speed and Sunburst for higher quality, and the company says weekly image generation has risen to over 4 billion across ChatGPT and its API.
  • The feature is aimed at short looping motion and storyboards rather than full video production, which reflects OpenAI’s shift since shutting down its Sora video app and limits the GIFs to quick gestures rather than long-form footage.
