Chase Resets ‘Pay Yourself Back’ With Narrower Categories and New Co-Branded Options Through Year-End

Most cardholders now see diminished value, with richer categories lapsed, leaving limited year-end options.

Overview

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve redemptions run at 1.25 cents per point for groceries (excluding Walmart and Target), department stores and gas stations through Dec. 31, 2025, while select charities remain at 1.5 cents per point.
  • Aeroplan cards offer 1.25 cents per point for travel with a 200,000-point annual cap and 0.8 cents for categories like Amazon/Whole Foods, dining, gas, groceries, home improvement and select department stores or utilities, many listed through Dec. 31, 2025.
  • United cards allow 1.35–1.6 cents per point toward the annual fee and 1 cent per point for United flight purchases of $50 or more, with current terms running through Dec. 31, 2025.
  • Southwest cards now have a Pay Yourself Back option at 1 cent per point for the annual fee within 90 days of the charge, a notably weak return compared with traditional travel uses.
  • Several once-valuable categories have expired—home improvement (Sept. 30, 2025), utilities, insurance and fitness clubs (March 31, 2025), wholesale clubs (Sept. 30, 2024)—and cardholders can still move points to premium UR accounts and erase eligible purchases from the past 90 days.
