Overview
- An eight-foot bronze statue unveiled by Turning Point USA on Sept. 10 was found smeared with red paint and a nearby memorial sign defaced on Sept. 13, three days after its installation.
- Phoenix police taped off the scene and opened an investigation after receiving early-morning calls, and as of the most recent reports no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested.
- Turning Point USA said it reviewed surveillance footage, cooperated with law enforcement, restored the statue and planned to replace damaged signs while moving the memorial indoors for security.
- The vandalism included red paint concentrated on the statue’s face and neck and an X over Kirk’s photo with the name “Jesus” crossed out, drawing condemnation from Erika Kirk and conservative officials and prompting warnings about escalating partisan hostility.
- The attack comes as the criminal case against the man accused of killing Kirk advances toward pretrial proceedings on Oct. 23, 2026, and it reinforces how public memorials have become flashpoints that could spur tighter security, political mobilization and legal scrutiny.
