Overview

  • Judge Shaun Smith KC set a minimum term of 20 years before Hartle can apply for parole.
  • The 18-year-old, who was 17 at the time, stabbed Smedley in the chest with a “Rambo-style” knife after a meeting to buy cannabis in Rose Avenue.
  • A Derby Crown Court jury unanimously convicted him in July after deliberating for about two and a half hours.
  • The murder weapon and Hartle’s phone have not been found, and CCTV showed Smedley staggering into the road before collapsing and dying at the scene.
  • Police called the attack completely unprovoked and the victim’s family issued statements describing a devastating, enduring loss.
