Charlie Dalin Reveals He Won the 2024–25 Vendée Globe While Undergoing Cancer Treatment

In a new memoir, the 41-year-old reports stable health, prompting a pause in his ocean racing.

Overview

  • Dalin discloses he raced with a gastrointestinal stromal tumour diagnosed in autumn 2023, withdrawing then from the Transat Jacques Vabre to begin treatment.
  • He maintained daily immunotherapy throughout the solo round‑the‑world race, adapted his navigation with a sleep focus of about 6.5 hours per day, and kept the illness private.
  • He finished on January 14, 2025 in a record 64 days 19 hours 22 minutes 49 seconds, then underwent surgery in February after the tumour progressed.
  • In interviews, he says the tumour was about 15 centimetres on the small intestine, that he has lost significant weight, and that the next Vendée Globe is not feasible for him for now.
  • He tells L’Équipe the tumour was removed in February and recurred elsewhere in April, adds that indicators are now stabilised, notes sponsor support with project updates expected October 13, and confirms Sam Goodchild has temporarily taken the helm of his IMOCA.
