Charges Filed in South Side Police Shooting as COPA Probes Separate West Side Case

Oversight actions intensify scrutiny of a pair of knife-related encounters.

  • Chicago police said 19-year-old Jeremiah Myles was charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer and one felony burglary count after being shot by an off-duty Broadview officer in Greater Grand Crossing.
  • The off-duty officer, 64, fired after a man approached with a knife around 9:02 p.m. in an alley on the 7300 block of South Langley Avenue; Myles fled, was detained, and was hospitalized in serious condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
  • In a separate incident around 11 p.m. in Austin, officers confronted a person with a large knife who allegedly advanced toward civilians; tasers were deployed without effect before an officer opened fire, leaving the individual in serious condition.
  • COPA opened an investigation into the West Side shooting, and the officer who fired will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days, according to police.
  • COPA also released surveillance videos from an Aug. 3 ambush of an off-duty Chicago officer in the 4800 block of South Bishop Street, where the officer sustained a minor hand injury and no arrests have been announced.
