Chargers Activate Najee Harris as RB Practices in Pads, Keeping Week 1 in Play

Los Angeles is preparing a shared backfield with rookie Omarion Hampton pending medical clearance on Harris' workload.

Overview

  • Harris was moved from the non-football injury list to the 53-man roster during cutdowns, making him eligible for the Sept. 5 opener against the Chiefs in São Paulo.
  • Coach Jim Harbaugh labeled Harris a "possibility" for Week 1 after the running back took part in individual drills and his first padded work since the July 4 eye injury.
  • The activation avoids an automatic four-game NFI absence and, under roster rules, gives the team flexibility in finalizing his game-day status as practices ramp up.
  • General manager Joe Hortiz said Harris is on track and "should be able to go, hopefully in Week 1," following a rehab progression from conditioning laps to side work with a trainer.
  • Whenever he returns, Harris is expected to share carries with first-round pick Omarion Hampton; Harris has never missed an NFL game and has four straight 1,000-yard seasons, while the Chargers have not had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2017.
