Chapada dos Veadeiros Wildfires Threaten Kalunga Territory and Private Reserves

Police have opened inquiries into suspected human-caused ignitions during an expanded air and ground response under extreme dryness.

Overview

  • Roughly 100 to 120-plus firefighters and brigadistas are deployed with helicopter support, including about 15 aerial sorties, across multiple fronts in Goiás.
  • The Chapada fires have burned at least 3,300 hectares, concentrated around the APA Pouso Alto, with several RPPNs reported damaged and the national park still unburned but under close watch.
  • Authorities activated a CEGIF enforcement operation and the Polícia Civil opened an inquiry, with one investigative line examining whether fires were set to create pasture, pending on-the-ground forensics after containment.
  • Very low humidity near 10 percent, strong winds and mountainous terrain are hampering suppression and raising risks for the Kalunga quilombola communities and local wildlife.
  • Separate large blazes in Minas Gerais have destroyed about 7,000 hectares near Verdelândia and São João da Ponte and are threatening the Serra do Gandarela area, with additional firefighting under way in Sete Lagoas.
