UT administration has handed over the 12-acre site to its engineering department for a residential extension, prompting displaced traders to set up temporary roadside stalls.

Overview

  • On July 20, a combined force of 1,200 police and 200 UT estate and civil defence officials oversaw the peaceful razing of 116 tin shops between 8:40 am and 1 pm.
  • The UT estate office reclaimed nearly 12 acres of government land in Sectors 53-54 that had housed the unauthorised market since 1985.
  • Valued at around ₹400 crore, the site has been transferred to the engineering department for a planned residential extension of Sectors 53 and 54.
  • Displaced traders, who argue they paid decades of taxes and have a pending high court petition, have erected temporary roadside stalls that are now impeding traffic flow.
  • This demolition builds on the administration’s broader campaign to clear illegal settlements, which has freed up more than 36 acres for Chandigarh’s planned expansion this year.
