Chandigarh Declared India’s First Slum-Free City After Shahpur Colony Demolished

The final clearance at Shahpur Colony capped a years-long campaign reclaiming roughly 520 acres for public use.

Overview

  • Authorities began razing Shahpur Colony around 7 am with eight demolition teams, nearly 500 police on site, medical units on standby, and immediate fencing to prevent re-encroachment.
  • The Sector 38 settlement covered about 4–5 acres with roughly 300 hutments and nearly 1,000 residents, on land valued at around ₹250 crore.
  • Residents were screened under the 2006 Chandigarh Small Flats Scheme, with about 70 Shahpur families found eligible and allotted EWS flats in areas including Industrial Area Phase I, Dhanas, Mauli Jagran, Ram Darbar, and Sector 49.
  • The UT administration says 18 slum colonies have been cleared to date, reclaiming about 520 acres of government land valued near ₹21,000 crore.
  • Officials highlighted this year’s major operations at Janta Colony (May 6–7), Sanjay Colony (April 23), and Adarsh Colony (June 19), and noted three Shahpur hutments remain under a brief court stay as the city was declared slum-free.
