Overview

  • Adarsh Colony, an illegal settlement spanning sectors 53 and 54 with about 800–1,000 makeshift dwellings that had stood for nearly 20 years, was cleared on June 19 under the slum-free campaign.
  • The administration reclaimed roughly 12 acres of government land valued between Rs 250 crore and Rs 480 crore for integration into the city’s master plan.
  • About 1,000 police personnel secured the site and the drive was paused for nearly four hours after a writ petition halted work until the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed the challenge.
  • Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav said the reclaimed tract will be used for residential plots and public utility infrastructure to reinforce Chandigarh’s stance against illegal encroachments.
  • With Adarsh Colony razed, only Shahpur Colony in Sector 38 remains, a four-acre settlement of roughly 300 shanties valued at Rs 150 crore.
