Scholz's discussions with Ghana's President Nana Akufo Addo pointed towards expanding Germany's economic relationship with Ghana, focusing on sectors like energy, agriculture, and digitalization. German exports to Ghana in 2022 were $314.77 million, a figure that experts believe can increase considerably in the coming years.
Germany has identified Africa as a key area for energy investment. German companies aim to enhance their activities in areas such as green hydrogen and liquefied natural gas on the continent. This is seen as a means to not only strengthen economies like Nigeria, which has suffered economic decline in recent years, but also to sustain German energy demands.
Germany's close relationship with Africa extends beyond the energy sector. The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) has implemented several economic programs across the continent. The agency's work has been instrumental in supporting the African Union and regional institutions, thereby solidifying Germany's influence in Africa.
Scholz's visit also promoted Germany's 'Compact with Africa' initiative, which focuses on providing better migration support systems. Under its reformed migration policies, Germany aims to attract young, skilled African labor.
