Chamber of Deputies Votes to Suspend Glauber Braga for Six Months

A cross-party deal on the floor replaced a recommended cassation with a temporary suspension to avoid a likely defeat on expulsion.

Overview

  • The plenary approved the six-month suspension by 318 to 141, with 3 abstentions, which preserves the deputy’s political rights.
  • The punishment supplants the Ethics Council’s recommendation to strip his mandate over an April 2024 altercation with MBL activist Gabriel Costenaro.
  • An alternative penalty drafted by Lindbergh Farias advanced after a 226–220 test vote signaled cassation lacked the 257 votes required, prompting Centrão and parts of the right to back suspension.
  • The vote followed Braga’s Dec. 9 protest in which he occupied the president’s chair, was removed by legislative police, TV Câmara cut its broadcast, and journalists were cleared from the chamber.
  • Party tallies showed unified support from PT, PSOL and allies, seven PL deputies voting for suspension, and arguments across blocs that a lesser penalty was a proportional way to conclude the case.
