Chad Terminates African Parks’ Mandates to Run Ennedi and Zakouma Reserves

Chad cites poor anti-poaching results, disrespect toward authorities, opaque finances.

Overview

  • Environment minister Hassan Bakhit Djamous announced the unilateral end of the 15-year partnership, with official notice delivered on October 6–7.
  • African Parks’ roles at the Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve and the Greater Zakouma Ecosystem, including Zakouma and Siniaka-Minia national parks, have been revoked.
  • The ministry’s four-page statement alleges unaudited accounts, improper tourism revenue handling, and use of Isle of Man bank accounts, presenting financial irregularities as contract breaches.
  • African Parks says it has begun talks with the government to understand the decision and to find a way to sustain conservation and social gains, noting its Ennedi agreement was renewed in April.
  • Scrutiny of the NGO’s governance has grown after it acknowledged ranger-perpetrated human-rights abuses in the Republic of the Congo; Prince Harry is a board member and former president.
