Chad Ends African Parks’ Control of Two Reserves After 15-Year Partnership

The NGO, whose board includes Prince Harry, says it has opened talks with the environment ministry to understand the decision.

Overview

  • The termination covers the Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve and the Greater Zakouma Ecosystem, including the Zakouma and Siniaka‑Minia national parks.
  • Environment minister Hassan Bakhit Djamous cited a recurring disrespectful attitude, a resurgence in poaching and a lack of investment by the charity.
  • The ministry’s four-page statement alleged financial irregularities, including unaudited accounts, improper tourism revenue collection and use of Isle of Man bank accounts.
  • African Parks said it is engaging the government to clarify the reasons and to protect conservation gains, noting its Ennedi agreement was renewed in April.
  • Earlier this year the organisation acknowledged human rights abuses by rangers in Congo, a development that has heightened scrutiny of its governance and practices.
