Chad Ends African Parks’ Control of Key Reserves, Alleging Misconduct

The charity says it is seeking talks with the environment ministry after the 15-year partnership was canceled over alleged contract breaches tied to resurgent poaching.

Overview

  • The termination covers the Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve and the Greater Zakouma Ecosystem, including Zakouma and Siniaka-Minia national parks.
  • Environment Minister Hassan Bakhit Djamous accused African Parks of a recurring disrespectful attitude toward the government, weak anti-poaching efforts, and insufficient investment.
  • The ministry alleged financial irregularities including unaudited accounts, illegal collection of tourism revenues, use of Isle of Man bank accounts, and transfers abroad in violation of national regulations.
  • African Parks said it has initiated discussions to understand the decision and to safeguard conservation and social gains achieved over 15 years.
  • The rupture comes after an independent investigation confirmed abuses by African Parks staff against Baka people in Congo, while the charity cites earlier elephant gains at Zakouma and retains Prince Harry on its board.
