Chaayos Apologises After Staff Relocated Bandra Stray Cat

Chaayos has accepted responsibility for an untrained employee, led a staff search and said it will tighten training and protocols to address public concern.

Overview

  • CCTV footage from October 28 showed two people carrying the cat before a neighbour intervened and returned it to outside the Bandra West café, and the animal went missing again the following Sunday.
  • Chaayos acknowledged on November 3 that an 'untrained' member of its team relocated the cat, apologised for the incident and said a 20-person team searched for the animal.
  • The NGO Humanity World Foundation located the cat and confirmed that meditation coach Purnima Hoon Motwani and her family have adopted it and are providing a permanent home.
  • Motwani and local witnesses said Chaayos staff initially responded dismissively when asked to help find the cat, and activists had called for a public apology and better handling of community animals.
  • The company’s pledge to review training and protocols highlights a wider issue for neighbourhood businesses in India about humane treatment of street animals and the reputational risks of mishandling them.
