CGT Postpones Nationwide Strike, Schedules Two October Mobilizations

Union leaders say weak strike adhesion drove the change.

Overview

  • The CGT's expanded mesa chica met at the UOCRA and on Tuesday decided not to call a new nationwide general strike and instead set a march for October 8 and to join the university march on October 15.
  • The October 8 mobilization will gather at 15:30 in front of the Secretaría de Industria (Av. Julio Roca 651) and will center on defending national industry, jobs and wages.
  • The CGT said it chose a more gradual, sector-focused strategy after judging current conditions would not guarantee high strike adhesion, a decision that exposed tensions with harder-line union leaders.
  • The CTA de los Trabajadores and the CTA Autónoma continue to push for a nationwide strike toward the end of October, so a split in the labor movement keeps the risk of broader stoppages active.
  • Unions cited recent INDEC and industry data showing falling activity and output to justify protests, and the move adds political pressure on the Milei government with implications for labor strategy ahead of 2027.
