CGT Delays Talks Until Oct. 2 Mobilization as Lecornu Seeks to Resume Dialogue

Unions seek withdrawal of Bayrou’s savings plan, a pension rollback, plus higher levies on top incomes.

Overview

  • Sophie Binet says the CGT will meet the prime minister only after the Oct. 2 nationwide action and on the basis of a renewed balance of power.
  • The intersyndicale deemed the Sept. 24 meeting at Matignon unproductive and called the Oct. 2 strike day after a large Sept. 18 turnout they cited at about 500,000.
  • Sébastien Lecornu signals he will receive union leaders again and has requested concrete proposals on work and social protection.
  • Union demands include scrapping the Bayrou savings measures such as the planned pause on benefit indexation, the doubling of medical co‑payments, and a new unemployment reform, as well as reversing the pension age move to 64 and taxing major fortunes and top incomes.
  • Binet says pressure will continue through December’s parliamentary debates, while reports from Matignon suggest hopes of drawing the CFDT toward a more moderate stance.
