CFM Moves RISE Open-Fan Design Toward Full-Scale Ground Testing

The company has completed key preliminary design reviews and will build full-size demonstrator parts to test whether the exposed fan layout can deliver large fuel and emissions cuts.

  • CFM said in mid-July that Preliminary Design Reviews for the open fan and outlet guide vane airfoils are complete, clearing the way to manufacture parts for a full-scale ground demonstrator later this decade.
  • The program has shifted from scale models and component benches to larger hardware after validating a first high-speed low-pressure turbine with more than 1,000 hours of testing and running thousands of dust-ingestion cycles.
  • GE and Safran are conducting hybrid-electric ground tests under the RISE umbrella, including GE’s two hybrid-electric engine tests and Safran’s PHILEAS campaign at Istres to explore more-electric drivetrains and integration issues.
  • CFM secured FAA and EASA approvals for a LEAP-1B high-pressure turbine durability kit and for an engine-level reverse-bleed system, with those upgrades due to reach customers in early 2027 to boost on-wing time in hot, dusty environments.
  • Open-fan engines put the fan outside a nacelle to raise propulsive efficiency but expose blades to debris and acoustic challenges, so success in Villaroche full-scale testing and later certification will determine whether airlines can expect roughly 20% fuel and CO2 savings and lower maintenance in service.
