CFE Clarifies Steps to Add Second Electricity Meter for Shared and Rented Properties

Guides published August 11 explain how property owners can meet CFE’s criteria to secure a second meter without installation fees.

Overview

  • El Imparcial and Excélsior released step-by-step guides showing how to apply for a second meter to allocate billing independently in shared homes, small businesses and rental units.
  • CFE will approve only applications with no outstanding debts, service lines within 35 meters in urban areas or 50 meters in rural areas and electrical installations that comply with low-voltage safety norms.
  • Applicants must submit a valid photo ID, a recent electricity bill in the owner’s name, the current year’s predial, RFC, full address details and a schematic of the proposed meter location at a CFE office.
  • Qualified CFE technicians conduct an on-site feasibility visit after document submission to verify that the existing wiring can be safely separated before installation.
  • While installation carries no direct charge, CFE requires a security deposit equivalent to the first bill and mandates that only its certified personnel perform the meter installation.
