CFDA Sets NYFW Fur Ban for September 2026

Designers will get CFDA guidance through a new materials library.

Overview

  • The CFDA will no longer promote animal fur on the Official New York Fashion Week Schedule or across its Fashion Calendar, website and social channels.
  • The policy begins with the September 2026 shows, giving brands time to adjust materials and show plans.
  • Farmed or trapped pelts from animals killed for their fur—including mink, fox, rabbit, karakul lamb, chinchilla, coyote and raccoon dog—are barred, with an exemption for Indigenous subsistence hunting.
  • Leather and shearling are not included in the restrictions, and the CFDA will provide educational resources and a materials/textile library to support alternatives.
  • Animal‑welfare groups welcomed the decision while the American Fur Council objected, and New York aligns with London as Milan and Paris still allow fur, with recent media moves such as Condé Nast’s editorial restrictions reinforcing the shift.
